I spoke yesterday at a seminar at the Convention on Modern Liberty on press freedom. It was a grim affair. Alan Rusbridger, the editor of the Guardian, spelt out how bleak the prospects for newspapers were. The regional press was collapsing – “for the first time since the Enlightenment major cities will not have a newspaper to report on local politics”. The national press was on its knees, and, he warned, would soon stop doing investigative journalism because of the costs of libel actions
